The results released on Tuesday show that the Republican Party is working to support Trump’s desire to punish people he sees as his enemies. These people include Cheney and members of the January 6 committee, whom Trump has said should go to jail.
“The subcommittee got proof that says “numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, and these violations should be investigated by the FBI.” This means that Cheney could be in a lot of trouble. Congressman Barry Loudermilk did a great job. “Trump said in a Truth Social post that Newsmax was written by Greg Kelly.”
In a social media post at 3 a.m. ET, Trump said that Cheney might be in trouble with the law because of evidence collected by the GOP subcommittee.
Ross Loudermilk, a Republican from Georgia and chairman of the House Administration Committee, wrote, “We will not fully regain trust until we hold those responsible accountable and reform our institutions.”
The panel Republicans’ 128-page interim report comes as Trump is getting ready to return to the White House and trying to fill his administration with high-level officials, like Kash Patel as FBI director, who seem to share his desire for revenge. Trump has also promised to free people who were jailed for their part in the Capitol riot.
It brings up again the Republican claim that Trump is not responsible for the attack on the Capitol. About 1,500 people have been charged by the Department of Justice, including the heads of the violent Oath Keepers and Proud Boys groups. Trump has also been charged with four crimes, one of which is conspiracy to overturn the election. Since then, special counsel Jack Smith dropped the charges against Trump before the inauguration because it is against Justice Department policy to charge a current president.
What the new story does, however, is single out Cheney. Cheney is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and was once a rising conservative star. She was kicked out of GOP leadership after voting to impeach Trump for starting the rebellion. She lost her reelection in Wyoming in 2022 to a Trump-backed challenger after she became vice chair of the January 6 group. In the fall of 2016, Cheney worked to stop Trump from running for president again. He had previously backed Kamala Harris for vice president.

In October 2019, Cheney talks at a news conference with other Republicans. The House had just passed a motion that made it official that President Donald Trump would be investigated for impeachment. There were no Republicans who backed that motion.

When Cheney shows up to talk to a joint session of Congress in April 2021, President Joe Biden gives him a fist bump.
The conversation takes place outside of the US Capitol in July 2021. Cheney was very angry that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy took all Republicans off of the committee that was looking into the attack on the Capitol on January 6.

On Tuesday, Cheney gave a thorough defense of the 900-page January 6 report that her group worked so hard on and that came out in December 2022. She also said that Loudermilk’s report “disregards the truth.”
Cheney said in a statement, “January 6th showed Donald Trump for what he really is: a cruel and vindictive man who watched violent attacks on our Capitol and police officers while he watched TV and refused for hours to tell his supporters to stop and leave.”
“Now, Chairman Loudermilk’s ‘Interim Report’ does not care about the truth or the huge amount of evidence from the Select Committee. Instead, it makes up lies and defamatory accusations to hide what Donald Trump did.”
President Joe Biden is thinking about giving pardons to protect Congress members and other people from Trump’s anger. But some of the people involved have said they are not asking for or want pardons from Biden.
Trump wants Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the former Democratic House speaker, Cheney, and other members of the January 6 committee, as well as Smith, the special counsel for the DOJ who charged Trump, to be put on trial.
It’s a good thing that the report came out at this time because Congress will soon be asked to confirm the findings of the 2024 election. Republicans refused to accept Biden’s win over Trump four years ago and said there was voter fraud. But Democrats say they trust and accept the election results.
The GOP panel’s report goes over again the many security problems that happened on January 6, 2021, and brings up the argument about how long it took to call in the National Guard and extra cops, who brought order back to the Capitol by nightfall. Congress went back to work that night and worked all the way through the next morning to confirm Biden’s election in 2020.
In the beginning, Loudermilk wrote, “This report shows that there was not just one cause for what happened at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.” “There is no more safety in the Capitol.”
But Loudermilk also talks a lot about the January 6 committee that Speaker Pelosi set up to look into what happened and its heads, Chairman Bennie Thompson (a Democrat from Mississippi) and Cheney.
The story singles out Cheney for prosecution because she worked with Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide who was one of the most important witnesses against Trump. Hutchinson gave some of the most detailed accounts of what the defeated president did that day.
At the January 6 meeting in 2022, Hutchinson told the committee that she hadn’t been honest with them during her first interviews, that she was having a “moral struggle,” and that she wanted to come back.
She finally fired her Trump-supporting lawyer and went on to give a famous public speech in which she talked about Trump at the White House while the Capitol riot was happening.
Cheney wrote about the work of the committee in her book “Oath and Honor.” She said that meeting with Cassidy and being worried about her safety when she chose to come forward was very important to her.
The group led by Loudermilk comes to the conclusion that these actions are witness tampering and should lead to prosecution.
The committee wrote in its report that Liz Cheney probably broke a lot of federal rules. This is something that the Federal Bureau of Investigation should look into.
It also says Thompson broke rules about how to handle files and recordings in the House.
Thompson said that the study was full of “false” claims. “No matter how much Mr. Loudermilk wants to change the past, there’s no getting around the fact that Donald Trump is responsible for the deadly attack on January 6,” he said.
In an interview earlier this month, Trump brought up his campaign threat to go after people who blamed him for what happened on January 6.
“Honestly, they should go to jail,” he said about the lawmakers who looked into the attack on the Capitol.
