Alabama Woman Faces Manslaughter Charges for Her Own Miscarriage
In a turn of events completely expected by anyone pro choice who is paying attention to “personhood” laws being passed around the country, an Alabama woman is now facing manslaughter charges for her own miscarriage.
Marshae Jones was reportedly five months pregnant when she got into an altercation with another woman which resulted in the other woman shooting Jones five times in the abdomen this past December. The gun shot wounds caused Jones to miscarry her fetus.
On Wednesday Jones was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on a manslaughter charge and is expected to be held on a $50k bond. In a bizarre twist, the woman who shot Jones and actually directly caused the miscarriage is not facing any charges due to the state’s “stand your ground” laws. Zero. None. No charges.
Under the law, because Jones was considered the agressor, she is the only one bearing the responsibility for her wounds and the consequential miscarriage. She didn’t shoot herself, didn’t ask to be shot, and probably (I’m speculating at this point) didn’t expect to get shot, yet she’s being charged for a miscarriage “manslaughter” as if she should have assumed being shot was somehow a logical, expected consequence of being in a fistfight.
As unbelievable as this all sounds, it is exactly what many in the pro choice movement have been saying would happen when extreme abortion restrictions and personhood bills are passed. We have been told over and over by the anti choice that pregnant women have nothing to fear, they only want to be able to go after the abortion doctors (as if this is somehow better). They called us ridiculous when we suggested woman may be open to prosecution for their own miscarriages, and here we are. The Gilead of A Handmaid’s Tale is upon us. Under his eye.
