Steve King in Trouble
Republican Congressman Steve King continues to lose ground in what was once thought to be a safe seat.
This week, the Cook Political Report became the third national congressional ratings organization to move the 4th District Congressional race in favor of Democrat, J.D. Scholten. The race was moved out of the “Solid Republican” bracket and into the “Likely Republican” category.
This ratings change continues the positive trend for Scholten:
- In April, the Cook Political Report labeled Steve King’s seat “at risk” due to the Scholten campaign’s strong fundraising (Scholten has outraised King 2-to-1 over the last three quarters and also holds a significant “cash on hand” advantage.).
In July, Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball prediction moved Steve King out of the “Safe” rating for the first time in years.
Last week, Roll Call’s Inside Elections moved this race out of the “Solid Republican” bracket.
Inside Election’s Editor and Publisher, Nathan Gonzales said of the move:
We added seven Republican seats to our list of competitive races… The most interesting addition might be Congressman Steve King. President Donald Trump won Iowa’s fourth District with 61%, but King had just $118,000 in the bank on June 30 and it’s not clear what kind of campaign he will run. Meanwhile, Democrat J.D. Scholten is going to run a credible race, and he would be a force for the Democratic baseball team if he wins. (VIDEO)
Scholten said of the most recent change:
“While we’re excited to see national rankings organizations taking notice of what’s happening here in Iowa, this mirrors what we’ve been seeing across the district for months. People are tired of the divisiveness and ineffectiveness of Steve King and are ready for a Representative that will work with and for ALL of the people of the district. It’s become increasingly clear that this race is going to go down to the wire”.
