Glasson Releases Statement on Fetal Heartbeat Legislation
Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Cathy Glasson released the following statement Friday evening in response to Governor Reynolds signing the “Fetal Heartbeat Bill” :
“Kim Reynolds rushed to roll back the clock on women’s health in Iowa by signing this dangerous, extreme, unconstitutional law today. Instead of standing up to the right wing of her party, Kim Reynolds put conservative politics ahead of the health and safety of Iowa women. Reynolds is out of step with the values of most Iowans and by signing this unconstitutional law she proved she is unfit to be our Governor. Since Kim Reynolds did not do her duty and veto this extreme law, it’s now up to Iowans to veto her at the ballot box in November. We will not go backwards.”
Governor Kim Reynolds signed the bill into law on Friday, despite the adverse affects the law would have on the health, well-being, and bodily autonomy of women in Iowa, as well as similar legislation in North Dakota and Arkansas having been promptly quashed as unconstitutional by federal courts. Both Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and the American Civil Liberties Union plan to sue to stop the bill from taking effect on July 1st.
