The nation is still reeling from the events that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia last week as well as the fall out. We live in an unprecedented time when Nazis and White Supremacists (or Nationalists, as they like to say like it’s any better) openly walk the streets.
They shield themselves with the very Constitution that men and women of every race, creed, religion, and sexual orientation; the very people they see as lesser than themselves and worthy of subjugation and extermination, have fought and died to uphold and preserve.
They shield themselves behind a Congress that will do little besides distance themselves and a President who openly supports their causes, while smearing those who stand in the way of their abhorrent and ignorant agenda.
They shield themselves with the First Amendment while violently denying the rights of that Amendment to others, going as far as to commit a terrorist act that took the life of an activist and hero, Heather Heyer.
Heather sought to use her voice for justice and to defend the rights and liberties of those of whom these very terrorists use their voices and actions to intimidate and harm. For that, she was murdered, and nineteen other activists beside her severely injured.
We here at Progressive Voices of Iowa want to make unequivocally clear that we denounce any ideology or monument that would defend, embolden, or sanitize the history and institution of slavery.
We denounce symbols of hate and stand firmly against those who would raise these symbols as a clearly false claim of superiority.
We denounce the institutions of Fascism, Nazism, white supremacy, and other institutions of discrimination, hate, and ignorance.
We will tirelessly challenge and hold accountable any official who attempts to justify or support the actions of hate groups and domestic terrorists, and do everything legally within our power to remove them from office.
Most importantly, we will support and defend our brothers, our sisters, our fellow human beings of all races, creeds, color, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
Heather Heyer’s voice will be amplified. It will be a candle in the darkness and it will shine brighter than any torch lit in the name of hate.
And we promise to do everything in our power and do our part to ensure that candle keeps burning.
