Who’s running for what, where, and when? A series.

Let’s take a minute to look at what the numbers were. In Iowa, there are 99 counties. Each county has between 2,000 and 425,000 people. Included below is the turnout report for the 2016 General Election.

Look at it. Find your county and see something interesting?

In Dallas county, my county, we had huge lines. The voter ID arguments talked about 6000 missing votes … That’s 150% of the votes counted. Less than 4000 show counted and 6000 were recently found. The margin in total votes (3714) was less than those lost votes. That investigation hasn’t concluded and yet they passed a law prescribing IDs.

Look at Adair county only 420 registered voters voted out of 2900!

In almost every county there were more available registered voters on the other side of the aisle than voted for the winner. Yet, and get this: Democratic voters had only one county where greater than 33% of their voters were counted while Republican voters had 10 counties where over 50% of their voters were counted (with 23 over 33%). In order to win, there must be a message that takes a voter to the booth. The voter needs to know there is a vote and who is their choice.

In this series, I want to spotlight where progressive candidates are needed. From a county school board to a city mayor, if it’s an elected position we all should know about it. Did this election motivate you to get active? Do you want your voice represented? Do you want to make a difference?

I’m compiling the list of where positions are and when to vote. From the obvious governor and state roles to the local city positions. You can help. Send an email to 4smcguire@gmail.com with your local city and county elected positions and I’ll get it in your county list.
