Letter to the Editor: Common Goal

By Mason J. McCoy

In 2007 I wrote this poem for a poetry contest. I had been looking for outlets to vent my frustrations with the injustices I was seeing everywhere around me. It has been a decade and the themes in this poem are more relevant than ever. We must stand together, put aside whatever beefs we have with each other, and fight for each other. In times like these we all have ways to help each other weather this storm. Some of us write, some publish, some share, some protest, some debate, some listen. We all have our place.

Common Goal

Put away your ethnocentrism
Cuz you’re no better than me
You see a lot of colors
Starin’ into a prism
But soon it will all turn gray
You see a lot of colors
Starin’ into a prism
You better make some room for me
All the colors, the people of the world
Will soon unite as one
All the colors, the people of the world
At peace, no longer a pun
So stand up and be counted
Because we’re all the same
No divisions anymore
Just the human race
So realize that you’re not alone
And unite for a common goal
